What Is Jungian Therapy and Art Therapy?

Jungian Therapy and Art Therapy work together to encourage creative connection in the psyche

Jungian therapy originates in the work of Carl Jung. Jung understood that the psyche communicates through symbols, dreams, images, and archetypal themes. In my practice, I help clients explore these symbolic layers in a grounded, creative, and collaborative way. Through honoring the psyche and it’s relationship with the unconscious we work towards integrating lost or cast out parts.

Art therapy allows us to access emotions and unconscious material that may not yet have language. Often you feel something long before you can explain it. Through image making, color, shape, and creative exploration, we begin a dialogue with the deeper psyche. Carl Jung is often considered one of the first Art therapists. Jung encouraged painting in his analysis, and created his own powerful images from his experiences with the unconscious. Art Therapists are trained to work with images in safe and contained ways. Other therapists may incorporate art making into their work, but they will not have the same depth of understanding that a trained art therapist has. Art Therapy and Jungian therapy are very powerful and can result in long lasting psychological change.

When Jungian therapy and art therapy are combined, clients often experience:

Increased self awareness
Integration of shadow aspects of the self
Relief from chronic shame and self criticism
Greater emotional regulation
Clarity around life transitions
A stronger sense of identity and meaning

Creative work helps you externalize what feels overwhelming internally. The image becomes a container. The psyche begins to integrate previously unconscious material and reorganize.
